As a special offer to followers of my blog, website and my Daily Paintworks Gallery a number of works will be offered at half my usual price for a limited time only!! Kicking off with this piece 'Right Flow', inspired by the working in arena at our Dressage National Championships with half passes and extended trots all over the place !!!
This time of year is usually quite a reflective one for me, evaluating the creative journey and work through the year just gone and planning what might be next year. I will be travelling to Newlyn on the coast in Cornwall at the end of January to attend an experimental painting workshop. Newlyn has a rich history as an artist colony with spectacular scenery. I will be accompanied by two fellow artists and friends, something to really look forward to in the depths of Winter.

I am back to the place where a new body of work will be created and the ideas are flowing through my brain. For me it can be the flash of an image in my mind, or even a phrase, usually very fleeting, like a little invitation to go down a different path and look at something closer. Another way forward is the idea of a new (to me) surface , something I have not painted on before perhaps with a new media. To encourage myself to explore with some smaller scale pieces I am starting a new blog attached to this process of work, it's called 'Go With the Flow' I can go anywhere I like with it and will blog about the process and offer some of the resulting pieces for sale.
'Go With the Flow - 003' (still in progress)
Mixed media...ink,acrylic, charcoal and pastel...so far!!!
My style seems to be constantly evolving and I am eager to try new media and methods of mark making, laying down colour and tone. One thing on my mind (and it feels a bit of a guilty secret) is a very posh box of 180 Unison pastels which I have had for YEARS and have hardly touched. Unison pastels are a top brand with colours to die for, they are so beautiful, and yet it seems like I have been scared to use them, even a bit overwhelmed by the colour choice which seems very differnt to laying out a palette of oil colour and mixing what you want. I convinced myself that pastels were a bit impractical, which to some extent they are.....they are a bit like a chalk and have to be handled with care not to smudge and even when framed and under glass a slight knock can dislodge some pigment so transporting can be tricky.
So, the box has been tucked away in the studio........however I have a long table set up so I can lay out all the trays at once and will post a pick when it's all ready to go.

SALLY MARTIN'S DRAWN TO DRESSAGE BLOG It is time for my new challenge 'Drawn to Dressage' to launch, I have been thinking about it rather than doing it for way too long! I have to admit to some of the reasons for doing this project being selfish, basically (from knowing the results of past blog projects) it helps me raise my game, makes me experiment more and question why I do what I do seeing as I try to explain and share the experience with you. For those who follow along I hope there will be something to gain from the project also, I know from speaking to art appreciators at exhibitions and events that an insight in to one's processes and methods can be interesting, hopefully the added bonus will be original art at special blog project prices.
'Drawn' - Sketch 9
Mixed Media on deckle edged 300lb watercolour paper - image size approx 30x22inch inches £195
This is quite a large sketch and I do find facing a large piece of heavyweight quality paper somewhat daunting at times as you can't just wipe it off if it goes wrong......you get one shot and have to go with the flow...and see what you get!!

'Drawn' - Sketch 8
Mixed Media on deckle edged handmade paper - image size approx 10.5X8 inches £50
I have photographed this piece sitting on grey board so you can see the deckled edge to the paper, these pieces can look fabulous 'float' framed under glass so you keep the edges on display.

'Drawn' - Sketch 7
Mixed Media on 90lb watercolour paper - image size approx 10.5X8 inches £60
Note to self ...FIGURE OUT THE WHITE BALANCE ON THE CAMERA!!!! The paper is a soft white but has photographed quite grey due to my lack of white balance knowledge setting my camera up.
Again this is mixed media, crayon and wash, left to dry them charcoal worked over, then certain details 'lifted' out with a putty eraser. It has reminded me how much I like the effect of the lift out technique where you start by covering the whole piece with a tone in pencil, charcoal etc then lift the media off in stages from mid tones to the lightest at the very end.

'Drawn' - Sketch 6
Water soluble crayon and wash on 300lb watercolour paper image size approx 11X11 inches £75
Experimenting a bit with hard and soft edges, I am amazed by how many differnt effects you can get from one water soluble crayon, a brush and some water. The quality of paper is crucial, I am using 300lb watercolour paper, it is very thick and can handle lots of water being applied without buckling as would a more lighweight paper.

'Drawn' - Sketch 5
Water soluble crayon and wash on 300lb watercolour paper image size approx 11X11 inches £75
Again linking two horse and rider combos together. Drawn with water soluble crayon, worked over with a wash, then after dry worked over again with graphite stick which I was pleased with becuase the depth and tone of the graphite complemented the tone of the wash and did not overpower it.

'Drawn' - Sketch 4
Water soluble crayon and wash on 300lb watercolour paper image size approx 11X11 inches £55
This continues the process of distilling down to the basics, placement of the shapes and the angle and attitude of the riders body give the feel to the piece. I am getting more interested in depicting pairs or groups of riders. I think the energy of a busy working in arena is amazing and am working on some larger pieces on this theme.
