Sally Martin's Affordable Art Affair Day 10

SALLY MARTIN'S AFFORDABLE ART AFFAIR
Day 10

As a challenge to paint more successfully on a smaller scale, earlier this year I undertook a project to create 100 paintings in 100 days. The process was a revelation and I now realize I miss the daily deadline, it seems to really intensify and focus my creative drive! Another benefit is that is allows me to experiment with new media, dip in to other subject matter and create small artworks that I can offer at very affordable prices.

So, here I go again .......

Day 10
£90
21x15inch watercolour on 300lb paper

I am really pleased with this piece and especially enjoying working in layers with varied media. I really wanted to keep the energy of the underpainting but use charcoal to describe the form of the hindquarters in particular..I am happy with the balance! I now want to explore gouache paint more thoroughly, it is watercolour paint but has 'body' ie it is not transparent like pure watercolour it has covering power and I would like to see how it interacts with charcoal.

About my Affordable Art Artworks

My subject matter will be mainly equestrian, with some figurative, still life and landscape included.

Sizes will vary, I will post full details with each image.

Conditions of purchase from The Affordable Art Gallery

Please understand colours may vary slightly between the actual painting and the image on your screen
due to my digital camera's results and your monitor.

Box canvases can be displayed framed or unframed. Canvas panels will need framing , in paintings where I have worked right up to the edge of the canvas I recommend 'float' framing so the edges remain uncovered by the frame. Works on paper will require mounting, glazing and framing, the image size is the mount board aperture size I suggest for the image.

Works are sold on a first come first served basis, as I am not always able to immediately update the sales status occasionally paintings become twice sold, in which case I will immediately refund the payment. I make every effort to avoid such occasions.

Money Back

If the painting is returned within 30 days of the buyer receiving it, Sally Martin will return money paid minus fees (PayPal /Credit card) and shipping.

The buyer is responsible for return shipping costs.

Day 9
£90

I started this sketch yesterday, left it overnight to dry and today decided to do absolutely nothing more to it!! It is very understated but I am very happy with the loose feel and suggestion of the horse and the movement instead of explaining everything. It's a bit like when you glance at something, you are left with an impression, rather than a sustained viewing where all detail is absorbed.
It is a grey wash on slightly off white paper which is a little greyed on my screen, I have to learn how to use the white balance on my camera!!

Day 8
£95
8x6inch

The actual process of painting is just one part, sometimes quite a small part, of my daily work life. It always surprises me the amount of peripheral goings on, trips to the framers, ordering supplies, keeping up with the paperwork, website, plus I self publish prints and cards.
Today has been very divided, the painting has gone well and the admin has been a challenge with some glitches on my website causing stress!! I must admit I have very high standards when I am dealing with other online stores and when i make mistakes with my own I HATE it. I had some paintings marked as available when they were in fact sold and it upsets me to disappoint people who have set their heart on a certain piece. It doesn't happen often, I intend for it never to happen again!!
At the easel things were great, the above painting came to a pleasing conclusion, I was pleased with a few more 'starts' (that's what I call the underpainting stage). Then before I left I did 6 speedy sketches, really going for loose lines and fluidity and feel i got some exciting stuff.
So, here i am finishing the days admin, re checking my galleries for correct sales status!!
Onwards and upwards!!!

Last week I mentioned that during the 100 painting project some people sent me wonderful pictures of their horses and ponies and I would welcome people to do the same for this project. There is no guarantee they will be used, but they might!! This is a painting of Munro, based on an image file emailed to me by his owner, I just couldn't wait to paint him. His beautiful windswept mane and kind expression, plus of course the myriad of warm and cool greys to play with and the sunlit hillside with the moor beyond..I enjoyed this from start to finish!

Day 6

Here in the UK it is a public holiday tomorrow and I shall be attending a medieval fayre down in the south east with an early start so I am posting this an evening ahead.
This mare was on full alert, nostrils flared very intent gaze, really checking me out. She lives in the same paddock as last weeks mare and foal and I think she was extra vigilant knowing little one was there. Again I am really looking at what happens to coat colour in the evening light, playing the cooler shadows with the hot colours in her mane and the sunlit side of her face. The long mane gives extra interest.
Today I attended an agricultural show and spent a long time watching the Hackney class, it is not a class I have paid a lot of attention to up until now but the horses and ponies were incredible and really made an impression I think this week will see my first Hackney painting!

Yesterday's painting was Mum and this is baby. Their paddock is just up the lane from my studio and I have enjoyed watching them through the summer, this picture was taken when the foal was less than a week old. Evening sunlight does wonderful things to coat colour, here it has brought out touches red burgundy and purple from a very dark coat and he is tucked in close to Mum with her wonderful blue mauve shadows.

Another favorite theme for me is painting subjects 'contre jour' or against the light. It is a wonderful opportunity to explore the real colour in shadows, it is easy to think it must be just a darker version of the object colour, but then you look and keep looking and are amazed by all the factors that affect shadow, colour...intensity of light, surrounding colour, bounced light and atmosphere are some of the main players. In this piece it was a joy to play the blue shadows against the green background and adding the final highlight colours really makes everything sing!

My blog yesterday was about how I love to portray the moving horse and it doesn't get more action packed for movement than in the sport of polo.
Polo is fairly unchartered territory for me but has been on the 'want to do' list for a long time. It has been very refreshing to approach a new subject, well a known subject in new and very varied positions! The equine form is fascinating to me under any circumstances.

Day 2
Mount aperture will be 22.5inchx19inch
Mixed media on watercolour paper
  £90 incl postage

As an extra special offer in the first week of the Affordable Art Affair (this is a lot of sketch for the price) it will frame up to approx 30inchx27inch.
Half pass is such a graceful movement, full of athleticism and impulsion when done correctly. I was pleased to have captured the movement in this sketch which started with a wash of watercolour worked over with charcoal and white conte crayon.

Day 1
Mixed media on handmade deckle edged paper approx 8x6inch

This handmade paper does have an irregular shape, part of the made by hand charm!

I loved the lighting in this little dressage schooling cameo. I have been experimenting with different papers and love this handmade paper with the deckle edge. Being handmade it has irregular edges and would look wonderful floated on a darker toned background, here I have photographed it on a mid grey. I think my work is moving in a 'less is more' direction, with my drawings I am trying to use less lines and make the line I do use absolutely 'right' by using the same reference material and drawing it a number of times it is like rehearsing and honing in on the essentials.
