As this pair passed the mirror and corner doorway of the indoor school the daylight caught the chestnut 's neck, mane and the side of his face with wonderful bluey highlights.

I am especially pleased with how I hadled the grey shadow colours here, most of the side of this Lusitano Stallion is in the shade but i loved the way his flank and ears are caught in the sunlight. It also kept the spontaneous feel which i got in the underpainting.

I get so inspired by the process of daily schooling, I love to watch the warm up and the work and the reward. The best riders achieve an almost meditative state, often referred to as the zone, it happens in painting too!

I love the behind the scenes world of the horse, whether it is a daily dressage schooling session or readying for the race track. This painting depicts the walkway behind the saddling stalls at Emerald Downs racetrack in Wa USA. I love how the backlight of the sun picks out highlights on the horse's mane and blinkers and areas of the handlers body.

A very loose and washy interpretation, I want to work on saying less and less, it is tempting to want to put more detail in but I want it to be about the flow of energy that just emits up and through this horse's neck and right up to the poll.

Still in acrylic mode I used the paint very dilute and it acts like a a pure watercolour.
As with many things the simpler versions are more difficult to execute, it's a one chance deal to get the lines right, no overpainting or rubbing out. I just let loose for an hour and of the numerous line paintings this is one I felt had 'something' , an essence of the movement without having to explain every last detail. It brought to mind a trip to London in the early 80's to see the Great Japan Exhibition and viewing a stunning brush and ink work of a dragonfly, there must have only been five brush strokes but they were of such exquisite perfection, it probably took the master 20 seconds to paint but a lifetime to practice and learn how.

I experimented with some acrylic paint today, this is still a very unfamiliar medium for me and feels way out of my comfort zone!
The main difference from oil paint is acrylic dries very rapidly so unlike oil paint you don't have much time for blending or softening edges. The upside is the underpainting dries quickly for you to work on top. I must learn to not be frustrated that it wont do what oil paint does and just find out more about what it WILL do!!

This bay hunter has such a classic hunter head, very handsome . In the big classes I was amazed at how long it takes to do the showing, the unsaddling, the resaddling and for the judge to ride etc

I loved the shape this horse was making over the jump and his dappled neck. It occurred to me that this is the first showjumper I have done since 2004!! I know this as it was an exciting project creating the poster image for the world famous Olympia Horse Show in London and I was the show artist! This venue runs a world cup qualifier and major showjumping classes. Olympia is actually on in London next week, this year the Dressage Kur has sold out as Moorlands Totilas will be competing

I made the decision to leave a very sketchy feel to all but the center of attention on this piece which for me is the lovely twist in the horses neck as he fidgets around standing in line. Now I have it uploaded it looks a little different and I need to explain the riders legs a bit more, they are so lightly sketched that you cant see it and it looks like she is floating! hmm, I wonder if nearly a painting on this day 7 day counts!!

There are so many things I liked about this subject but the first thing was the pink shirt and rose hair clip. I love the way the handler is standing looking up the line in her showing class, whip tucked in her back pocket. The calmness of the scene belies the action that happened later in the class, he looks very docile nuzzling her fingers but this Welsh Cob colt was all guns blazing when trotted out!!

This is another version of a composition I have depicted before. It is on a smaller scale and I am especially pleased with the palette of blue/green/grey shadow tones in the shadowed areas of the horse, I think they are more simplified and better expressed.
I did wonder about the horse's gaping mouth, the bit leverage is very apparent, but such imperfections are an unfortunate reality.

This horse is the fascinating Moorlands Totilas, a world record breaking dressage horse, he has an astonishing amount of action through his shoulders and i loved this cropped composition showing him really reaching across with his leading foreleg in the half pass.
