Phew...on the run today!! In between commissions I took time out to explore more with acrylics and more specifically layering them to build up the background and then draw into it with pencil when still wet. Then I wanted to create a 'lost and found' line feel, so there are drawn lines but they suggest rather than outline the whole thing. I was pleased with the session.

I have a new image of a gorgeous Spanish stallion and am planning some fairly big paintings of him. Usually I don't do preparation sketches but the daily painting is a chance to change my process a bit and this little mixed media piece is the first step..I love his mane and the way it is sweeping slightly forwards!

Wow, this is the start of week 8 of the Affordable Art Affair blog!!
This piece is based on reference I have used a few times...it seems as I have produced each piece I have been paring right down to the basics, the essence of the movement that attracted me in the first place. It comes down to the angle and line of the neck and the line of the tail though that is not such a feature in this drawing as it is in the paintings.
I am pleased, I want to keep reducing and simplifying.

My favorite place at a dressage show is the warm up arena, I find it fascinating watching the riders work in. Nowadays many of the riders are hooked up to personal audio links with their trainers so you don't hear as much of the coaching as in the past but there are still a few who like the old fashioned way of shouting out observations, comments and instructions, it is a great way to learn.
I love the way the shapes of the horses and riders interact when the arena gets busy, horses converge and the energy of their movements this way and that, extended and collected, lateral and forwards really create an interesting interplay of shapes. This painting depicts three such horses and I felt the shapes made an interesting composition.

How is this for a gorgeous chunky cob! I loved the topline of his neck and how it swings up and curves over his hip. All the different shades of chestnut accentuated the kinks in his mane and forelock and what an expressive face!

I really enjoyed doing this little painting, it has a lot of my favorite things!! Beautiful grey horse, lovely lighting with the play of the shadow along the neck, beautiful shadow colours and contrast of warm and cool shades of grey. I especially like the way it contrasts with the buttery warmth of the background colour.

I am reminding myself I have broadened the scope of painting to include, well, anything!!
Having just completed a 40inch square landscape for my own walls I want to continue the theme to some smaller pieces.
This scene is from some travels to the New Forest last year, I just went by myself for a few days and explored this very special part of the UK. This painting is all about the bright sunlight light and what it does to leaves, I loved the purples in the distance and how they set off the various shades of yellow in the leaves.

I have always had a soft spot for Exmoor and Dartmoor ponies, I was besotted by Rumple a Dartmoor pony at my local riding school when I was 11years old. So, this little fella really appealed and it comes to mind that here in the UK we are fortunate to be so rich in native breeds.

I have not watched many Hackney show classes and was astonished, I know they are renowned for the knee action but my goodness I did not realize how extravagant that can be!!
This was a little powerhouse of a pony, I sketched him last week but I wanted to to paint him as well.

13x10 inch Pastel over watercolour on paper

this is another interpretation of a reference photo I used a few weeks ago. I planned this yesterday by laying a blue grey wash bearing in mind the shadow and highlight shapes I wanted to work over in pastel. I love the depth of shadow in the neck, this mix of media is something I would like to explore more fully.

Works are sold on a first come first served basis, as I am not always able to immediately update the sales status occasionally paintings become twice sold, in which case I will immediately refund the payment. I make every effort to avoid such occasions.

If the painting is returned within 30 days of the buyer receiving it, Sally Martin will return money paid minus fees (PayPal /Credit card) and shipping.
