As a challenge to paint more successfully on a smaller scale, earlier this year I undertook a project to create 100 paintings in 100 days. The process was a revelation and I now realize I miss the daily deadline, it seems to really intensify and focus my creative drive! Another benefit is that is allows me to experiment with new media, dip in to other subject matter and create small artworks that I can offer at very affordable prices.
So, here I go again .......

This kind of behind the scenes preparation moment really appeals to me. This very handsome dressgae horse was being most co-operative bending his neck round so the rider could adjust the noseband.......a very supple neck!!

I like the 'head on' kind of composition, it can be tricky as the foreshortening of the leading leg has to be very accurate. I like the contrast of the white markings on this horses' head aginst the darker steel grey in his body.

This is another from the set of images sent to me. I chose to paint this as I was really attracted to the play of light and shadow on the beautifully muscled neck, I also liked the litt;e flick of the forelock, it can be little details like this that really make a piece.

I was sent some more absolutely wonderful images to work with for my daily painting. I immediately wanted to use some silver metal leaf with this stunning steel grey horse. I especially like the way the light is strong on the front of his face, top of his neck and shoulder, it just seems to give a little extra atmosphere!

This painting was created using a picture sent to me by a client and depicts a special moment of her meeting this little foal whom she went on to take home. It is obviously a special moment, enhanced by beautiful light and the meadow flowers surrounding this captivating scene.

Mixed media on deckle edged paper £80
This is the second treatment of the same composition as yesterday, a bit bolder and more contrast of tones and then worked up with some layers of white conte crayon and charcoal lines to add definition.

There's a time for bold and painterly and energetic but also a time for a more restrained and delicate approach. I am using the same composition and trying different treatments through the week. Half pass is such an elegant movement and I have tried to capture a feeling of lightness and poise .

I got well and truly blown off course for a few weeks due to illness and then just being generally off kilter. Finally I am working on settling back into a routine, a little different with the winter light making me adjust the easel time.
This piece was almost finished whenI had to take a break.........I still want to explore reducing the amount of detail, I have just been working on some small works that I loved after the first session and then I seem to have deadened them! Time to start again!!
