A mini Moorlands Totilas!! I have been wanting to do another large canvas but move away from the square format I have used for the previous large canvases. I don't usually do any preparatory pieces for paintings but doing the small paintings for the 100 days project is changing the way I work. From this piece I know that the large canvas I want to have the full length of horse and rider. I was not happy that this little painting was different enough from the previous composition to be available for sale...hence the NFS. I will try again this week !!

I loved watching this chestnut working in, he was just stretching his frame and really engaging. I had done a watercolour sketch of this composition which I was really pleased with........this little oil sketch has now planted the seed in my mind to do another version.....but really BIG!!!

The half pass is such an elegant and flowing movement when properly performed. I challenged myself in this painting to lay the paint down with minimum brush strokes and blending...to have it very direct, immediate and to not over explain......not to get hung up on detail. I am pleased with the result with the exception of the horses muzzle area...which is white and pink and needs about three more brush strokes and more white!!

I love watching the cob classes, they are usually full of action and characters ...both equine and human!!!it is the energy and action of the full flight trot that i wanted to capture.
I will re take this photograph as i had to do it under bad lighting and there is an orangey cast, no matter what I did in photoshop!!

This was a very pleasing result. I decided to prime up a few canvas panels with a salmony pinkish base coat by tinting some gesso (like an artist grade white emulsion paint!) So parts of that are peeking through this little head study and it helps the warm coat colours play off the purple darks in the shadowed areas. The thing that 'makes' this painting for me though, apart from the beautiful horse 'Leibling' is the fancy patent leather noseband. I have the urge to do a larger version of this piece.

Lots of things about this little painting please me, it is a bit more immediate, less blended than usual. I like the muted background tones. I have noticed a tiny area that needs to be better explained, the handlers chin is confused with the head of the guy in the background!!

I specialize but don't limit myself to equestrian art. I love trees, these are close to my home and they really wowed me on this bright autumn day. Backlit by the sun the colours just zinged and I really enjoyed capturing this memory in this impressionistic way.

Time to dip a toe into the water media!! Gouache to be exact which is a type of watercolour which has 'body' to it which makes it opaque rather than pure watercolour which is transparent. I wanted to use the water media to it's fullest, which for me means juicy loose and washy, with colours flowing and blending!! I left it as a suggestion of the half pass movement rather than defining and explaining too much.

This is the 3rd racing theme this week, they are of the same horse and rider but different stages of galloping past me...they would make a neat triptych!!
All the things I love to paint about are here, light, colour and movement and I particularly love the jade green saddle cloth and blinkers and the zing of the yellow eye shields!!

I love portraying the half pass, in this painting I noticed how the arches in the marquee at the end of the arena echoed the shape of the hindquarters of the horse!

I had planned a racing piece for today but this little one took over. I am so excited by this painting, as mentioned before i love painting subjects against bright light but this one has enabled me to really relish the top light effect from the skylight. The rider is directly under the beam of light and it has created a lovely atmospheric feel and sparkle. I also love the sense of concentration and the focus of the horse and rider.

I watched this horse's workout at Emerald Downs racetrack in the USA, it is very different from the UK as the horses are stabled on the track complex through the racing season. In the mornings they have scheduled exercise or workouts on the racetrack and the whole place is alive with horses and riders coming to and fro from the backstretch. This morning was beautifully bright. This is a slightly different angle than yesterday and there is one more to come as the horse moves away.....they would make a good triptych!!

I love painting subjects against the light and this was a great challenge to judge the tonal values on the horses body against the bright background colours and the brightest highlights in the mane and the riders jacket...I am so pleased with how it turned out!!

This is a similar composition to yesterday but the attraction for me was the light and the way it bounced off the ground and lit the underbelly of this lovely bay horse, really picking up the the orange!!
