A very uncomfortable day continiung with water media, pastel, charcoal......everything but my favoured oil paints!! I have to make myself keep on with it, I am so used to getting the results I want with oils I have to accept that I might not get an end result I like but I will LEARN and that is the important thing! Towards the end of the day I got this little painting and was very pleased, I like the economy of brush strokes and the freshness of the lines...phew!!!

I spent most of the day experimenting with acrylic and gouache water based paints. I have only really occasionally dipped in to these media so they do not really feel very familiar. With oils I know what the agenda is, I know how they will mix , how they handle,merge and react, how far I can thin them , how thickly I can use them and how much covering power they have. Leaving the familiar can feel quite risky, especially when there is a deadline to produce a finished painting every day! As you will see, today's painting is an oil!! I learned alot using the water media but ended up with more than a few for the bin, and a few that are promising but needed to dry out before adding another layer. So out came the oils!!

Well, as the Monty Python team would say ..."And now for something completely different!!)
This is the same Arab stallion as in day 58 but on day 65 he is giving it some attitude. I remember this supreme champion show class so well as it was chaos, mainly due to this pair and their wild antics. I am aware that you want an animated performance when showing your prized stallion but this was so animated he was on his hind legs most of the time and then turned his quarters in and gave the girl both barrels catching her on the thigh and knocking her to the grounds.......so then he is galloping around the ring with a rope fence between him and the mare and foal class next door!!!
This photo of the painting is not picking out the subtle shaping of his back......the bright blue background is from a lorry parked behind the ring and I wanted to experiment with a strong colour......I might just try a lighter blue...will look again tomorrow and decide.

I really like to crop in on a subject, lead the viewer through a journey, to invite the focus on to what I have seen. Here it is the beautiful line of the leg coming forward, the reach of the shoulder and line of elbow through knee and lower leg, the diagonal composition that leads the eye from the riders arm and hand down through the horses head and chest and away through the leading front leg.

This piece confirms to me something I have been pondering a while...I have a thing for swishy tails!!! I am aware that swishing is not required in a dressage test and can be classed as resistance to the aids but I just love that extra movement!!

At the end of a days painting I often use up paint remaining on my palette underpainting a canvas or two for the next session. Quite often I will come up with my strongest work at this time, I think it is a mixture of having loosened up and got my 'eye' in as the day progresses. It can even be that i am quite tired and feeling a bit blase' about the whole process and would rather go home......but I tell myself to paint a few for the bin, just get it done....... that non attachment to a result can allow for taking a few risks and pushing things in a way I would not normally go. Today's oil sketch is an end of the day piece and I like it's freshness and immediacy.

This painting is all about the action!! I purposely left areas very vague so all the veiwers attention is kept on the forehand of the horse and the posture of the rider....I wanted to suggest the sand flying up so you can really get a feel for how this horse really sat down on his hocks in order to perform the movement. I think the firey reddish brown in his sunlit coat really matches this fiery horse!!

I am becoming more interested in Spanish breeds after having seen some demonstrations at the British Dressage Championships over the past few years.....a trip to Spain is high on my wish list! This young Arab stallion was taking a break from being extremely naughty in his showing class, later in the week I hope to paint him during his athletic antics!
Again I am drawn to painting a subject 'Contre Jour' or 'against the light' with the sunlight just picking up on parts of his face and neck and contrasting with the bluey green shadows...then there is zap of the red halter!!

This was so enjoyable to do...I really loved the waythis pony's mane was slightly ruffled by the breeze and his very direct gaze......he seems very assured of himself! Unfortunately by the time I took the photos the light was really gloomy and the only bright spot cast a shadow down the right hand side no matter how I positioned it.

Since the start my 100 Days project I have had messages from people who are following the blog and painting a day who have been so kind with positive feedback. My usual workday is quite solitary, basically me, the paints, the canvas and the easel!!
I have received photo images of horses and ponies from followers of my blog, with permission to use if I wanted. This handsome chesnut really appealed to me. He has a very regal head and expressive, alert outlook. The lighting showed the fine bone structure of his head and his kind eye and there was an interesting contrast between the chestnut coat colours and the purplish highlights of the bridlework.

I felt really out of sorts after not being able to post an image yesterday, I did not sleep well at all!! I made extra sure I had my camera memory card with me on the journey home!
Well, what can I say about this Lusitano stallion 'Uivador De Broa', he has it all and I never get tired of painting him. In these paintings I have the added element of fairly 'dramatic' lighting, which for me means that the light effects are one of the main lures of wanting to paint these particular reference shots, especially in 55 where the rider is casting a shadow on the horses neck and you get the pale 'cool' blue shadow contrasting against the 'warm' tinged white of the sunlit areas.

Apologies!!
I knew I would goof sooner or later, I HAVE actually painted the painting (one I am rather pleased with depicting a Lusitano stallion).....cross my heart!!! However, I photograph the painting in my studio and then take the camera memory card home with me to load onto the computer as my office is still at home.......I forgot the memory card!!
So. tomorrow will be a double post

I am enjoying depicting scenes from the showring, not a subject I have dealt with much in the past. My local show 'The Oxted and Edenbridge' is a feast of equestrianism and many other country pursuits and crafts. There are all the show classes for ponies, horses, heavy horses, carriage horses, showjumpers, side saddlers, hunters hacks..and on and on! The larger show classes can take for ever...and I like watching the line up, when the judges eyes are elsewhere and competitors are chatting, primping, saddling and unsaddling and waiting for their turn to shine!

This is a scene from a visit to Henry Cecil's training yard Warren Place in Newmarket and this is one of the gallop tracks at the bottom of Warren Hill. I just love the relaxed feel of this pair on the walk back to stables after the morning session on the gallops. Also there was a challenge in portraying the totally green background and keeping a feeling of depth so I experimented with warmer foreground greens and cooling them off with blue for the more distant green

Well, over the halfway mark and continuing today with my foray into watermedia . In this piece I used a mixture of ink and goauche and I found that the goauche has a very matt finish in contrast to the india ink which has quite a gloss finish when dry. I really enjoyed exaggerating colours and being quite free with the brushstrokes, not worrying about precision but going for the 'feel' of the horses coming towards the viewer.....even spattering the paint in the foreground like they were kicking up the sand!!

Mixed watermedia on paper

Part of my purpose for doing this project is to experiment with different media and styles and that is exactly what I am doing here. On my recent trip to the Royal Academy of Art's Van Gogh exhibition I was surprised to see that much of the painter's early work was experimenting with sketching and washes of watered ink or body colour, mostly black and white or sepia. I have been trying out the different water media myself, or revisiting I should say, and also following an instinct to work in a semi abstract direction. After producing a number of sketches and ink drawings I binned quite a few but when it came to this it has something that I really like...I also resisted the temptation to work on it further as these pieces can die with a fraction too much detail........for now I am not putting it for sale as want to live with it in the studio a while longer to be sure it is at it's finished stage...and if it isn't..well i still might blow it!! I will let you know.

This is the same horse and rider as in day 46, they did a good test and here they are in the awards line up. In particular this rider seemed to really have a wonderful partnership with this yung stallion, he just tried his heart out for her and she sure let him know that he was doing a brilliant job...here he is just about to take his treat.

This horse just looked so happy in his work, forward, attentive and into the bridle. You could really see the unbroken channel of energy from his hindquarters through his topline, right up through the poll .He also had amazing light and shadow colours through the musculature in his neck.

I decided to include still life, landscape and figurative subjects in my 100 paintings project and actually this is only the 3rd non equestrian painting so far. I am surprised by my reluctance to put the horses aside!! I think it has to do with leaving the known for something that is unfamiliar....but then again art for me is all about looking....REALLY looking at exactly what is in front of me and then filtering that information through my own artistic 'channel' ......I enjoyed the different palette of colours !

Another scene from the warm up arena and this little painting has so many of my favorite things. It is kind of behind the scenes, it is a moment of pause for the rider and activity for the ground crew. That is the rider's trainer taking the bandages off, he is probably giving some last minute pointers before she puts her tailcoat on and heads over to the competition arena.

My favorite thing to do at a dressage event is spectate at the warm up arenas. I think it is endlessly interesting to watch how different horse and rider combos work in, how they start with being forwards into a long low outline and gradually (for the more advanced horses) ride the horse up and forward into collection. In this little painting I wanted to express how happy, relaxed and freely this horse was at the start of his warm up. I also love the highlight purple tones on his topline and how they play with the acid green of the grass in the foreground.

Another foray into watercolour goauche and it is so interesting experimenting with how this media reacts....so different to oil paint! It's a bit like with horses and riding and the difference in training methods...... used to classical dressage I was given the opportunity to ride a friends reining horse, who had such beautiful training and movement except the aids where all in different places that I was used to....to start with the signals were all over the place until I got into the new 'feel'!!! I was pleased with this little piece.

I often ponder on why I choose the compositions I do, in alot of cases it has something to do with a certain line or flow of energy. In this simplified little oil painting it is all about the line of the neck...the way the horse his stretching through the topline.you can just FEEL the stretch!

Apologies for the blurry image, I will hope for better light tomorrow and get a better image. These two were chilling out in a paddock on my Aunts farm in USA, they were taking a break from normal weanling play duties! Pretty soon after I took this pic they just had to get up and come over and investigate.

A friend sent me some pictures of her horse snoozing in the sun and I just could not resist this one. I was attracted to the shadow shapes and the way the sun was highlighting his coat colours...plus he looks so sweet!!

The experimentation in gouache continues...I painted a few for the bin today!! It is a question of freeing up and being bold and decisive.......hesitation normally scuppers the the whole thing. So, this sketch is very simple and for me much more difficult than a small oil painting (where things can be painted over or wiped off etc) you just can't get away with anything!!

A day of experimentation with gouache...and many challenges....and at times just wanting to get back to my oil paints...and making myself stay with the goauche paints......and then towards the end of the day two bigger paintings began to show a hint of something exciting to me...........and this little one captured the energy of a schooling scene with a simplicity of brushstrokes that I was happy with. The background is actually white paper which I find is the most difficult to photograph well...which in this case I didn't!!
