Wow, day 97!!! I hear a kind of internal drum roll as I post in these final stages of the 100 Days...or maybe I am just over tired!! :-)
I was thinking today how good it makes me feel to think of all my paintings from this project that have gone out into the world (so far France, Norway, USA, Ireland as well as many parts of the UK). In this modern world we are privileged to have access to wonderful art in it's many forms but we are also under constant bombardment of mass produced images, on tv, newspapers, magazines, coffee mugs, tea towels and all manner of other things. As much as I enjoy making prints and notecards of my work there is still special value in a creation that is a one of a kind, not to be seen anywhere else, true original!

Sunlight on a pretty grey pony, what a pleasure to paint!
The next four paintings are planned out, I am wondering how I will feel when 100 is
created and posted on Monday. I have been thinking about possible mini challenges, maybe 30 and 40 dayers with various specifics, ie dogs or landscape, maybe link it with a local charity...who knows!! I do know that the small painting now has a firm place in my artistic repertoire.
Day 96 is another oil on board 10X8 inches as an extra special offer in the closing week of my 100 paintings project it is priced at about a third of what it would normally be!!!

Schooling is one of my favorite subjects, I love to watch the progression from warm up to work to cool down. It is interesting to watch each riders method, it is also amazing how a horse's whole 'presence' can change throughout the session...Maybe they don't really hold your attention to start with but as they progress their carriage changes and they begin to work in a collected frame they become energized and really begin to move !!

I just love painting grey horses!! There are such a variety of coat colours within the categories of steel greys, flea bitten greys and dapples etc I think my judgment of 'value' has improved immensely over the 94 days and my colour mixing also. I am still learning so much with each piece and kicking myself for not doing this project years ago!! It is in my thoughts do also start including a daily drawing into my studio routine..that might become bloggable in the future.

Part of my reason for starting a voyage of 100 paintings was to give myself a little more opportunity to feature non horse subject matter. Now that I have a suitable studio space I am able to set up to work from a model and today was my first life session with a model all to myself! I have only worked in a group setting before,where you only have so much say over the pose, and I have mostly worked in dry media rather than paint. This was an hour and a half pose and it was a good challenge to get myself in to the 'flesh' palette rather than the horse coat palette!!

I was watching the London Marathon on TV this morning and it bought to mind that these 92 days have been a marathon of sorts for me! Some phases have been easier than others, today was a bit of a mental struggle and I was feeling negative.........I had to do a bit of talking to myself to just keep working, hang in there and trust that (due to the knowledge of my past form) things would pick up. I started about 5 paintings and finally got in to the one above..phew!! and as I sat and carried on I gradually got lost in the process and came out at the end with a pleasing result.
This is a little larger than usual at 8X6inches, but I am holding the price at £75!!

I am really pleased with the light effect in this piece and there was an interesting pattern of light and shade between the two weanlings.
This is larger than the other pieces I have shown in the last 90 days, this canvas is 8X8inches ....this is a size that I have used regularly over the past few years and used to feel tiny...now it feels huge!! This size would normally sell at £250 but I wanted to add in a few extra good deals as the 100 days draw to an end!

Oh my...day 90!!!
To be honest I felt it a bit today, the impetus that has carried me through the past months had a bit of a wobble. I just felt, well...blank!! I tried working on a larger painting to get a bit of a warm up, get into the flow......nope, I still felt very low energy. I decided I didn't have to re invent the wheel or anything and gave myself permission to do a smaller version of a recent painting (Exuberant Honours). So, here it is...and here I am looking at the final 10 paintings in this series of 100. Be sure to keep an eye on these last days as I will be mixing in one or two larger pieces which will be priced still under £100, there will be some real deals going on !!

I used to feel that I had to have a large block of time to make a painting session. I now know that I can utilize chunks of time as short as 15 or 30mins and really make them count. There have been times where I have had to fly by the studio and make my little painting on a very tight deadline, the anxiety about getting it done really honed my focus in on the essentials. It is working along the line of "think through each brush stroke more and use less brush strokes" where i might have fiddled about with 3 or 4 strokes I might now use one that is more decisive and 'sure' this helps the paintings stay fresh and painterly rather than deadened by too much fussiness with the brush!

Two more weeks of my 100 Day project and I have been pondering what I have learned so far through the process.
I know that I can look back through my photo library time and time again and see new possibilities. I know that I can paint on a small scale. I know that a small painting can pack just as much 'punch' as a larger piece. I know that I never tire of painting horses. I know that there is always so much more to learn and each day's painting shows me something new!!

I had a really enjoyable day in the studio, I hesitate to say the paintings just fell off the brush but that is how it felt!! I have been trying out listening to audio books. Last week was Jane Austen's 'Mansfield Park' and this week it is Thomas Hardy's ' Far from the Madding Crowd' . I was not sure if focusing on a storyline (and all the mental images that would conjure) would interfere with my painting process. Music does not have a detrimental effect but there again you don't have to keep up with characters and the plot.
The results were very interesting, it seems that I am able to both listen and paint!! At times I would be into the story and the painting would be less conscious...and then I would focus on the painting and perhaps miss a little narrative..not so much as to lose the story line. It feels a bit like driving.....where alot of the process of controlling the car, the decisions about steering and speed etc are automatic responses...my painting process is so ingrained that it is now seemingly quite instinctive!!

Today's piece is a simplified version of the same reference used for day 75, I just wanted to focus on the horses head and neck with this one...and the colours reflected up from the arena surface.
There are just over two weeks to go of this project and I am feeling somewhat converted to the habit of creating these small works!

I reminded myself again today that part of the challenge for this 100 paintings project was to try some different approaches and leave my zone of experience . In today's painting I have used a more limited range of tones...(the darks are not quite as dark as usual) there is less contrast between the dark and light. All this is in an attempt to learn to diversify the light effects in my work and especially after having seen the Van Gogh exhibition where he uses a range of high(light) and low(dark) keyed palettes of colour.

Another late blog due to a very busy day, busy and memorable as I attended my Sister's Phd award ceremony at Guildford Cathedral. My Mother, daughter and I watched with so much pride and admiration as she received her doctorate. The whole atmosphere was very emotive, apart from any religious issues the huge and unusual proportions of the building are wonderous, the stone mason's art, the stained glass windows and the rousing organ music. The traditional robes of the academics as they process in to start the awards proceedings. I felt very emotional and it brought home to me how important our surroundings are to our emotional state, how we can affect mood and atmosphere with music. I will be extra mindful this week of music selections whilst I am working!!
This is a head study of the mum from yesterdays mum and foal. As I approached the gate to their field she thoroughly checked me out and let me know she was on guard.

Ok, so yesterday was earlier blogging than usual and today is much later blogging than usual. It is 10.30pm and I am just back from London. My daughter Ellie and I went to the Van Gogh exhibition at the Royal Academy of Art, then we perused the famous galleries on Cork Street and attended the private view of the 'Animal in Art Exhibition' at Fulham Palace. Lots of wonderful art to see and very special to have a lovely afternoon and evening with Ellie.
I do not usually go for 'cutesy' type paintings but the little guy in today's painting turned up in a field next to my studio a few days ago. He is quite a chunk of a thing and like all foals just wonderful to watch. I look forward to seeing him grow through his first summer.

I am a bit topsy turvy today and blogging much earlier than usual, I am now tied to the house all afternoon waiting for workmen to arrive and will get to the studio asap after that.
This lady in the pink blouse featured in a painting very early on in this 100 Days challenge, I really like the pink shirt and hair decoration. In the first one she was standing still and this one is all about action, the high knee and hock action of a beautiful cob and the handler well up to the pace.
It will be interesting to see how it feels to be in the studio for a late shift! I am not usually a painter who keeps late hours at the studio but sometimes it is good to feel off kilter. I have lots of ideas brewing for new work, driving me slightly nuts, making me feel almost a kind of anxiety and I know from experience I will at some point just bust loose and start lots of new pieces.

Wow, day 80!!!
A bit of a tough day in the studio..it happens...usually after a very positive spell and also after finishing paintings (I finished some larger pieces this week, see my main gallery). Felt like I had no energy and nothing was going right. I made the decision to burn every half finished work that I am sick of looking at ...I had done a halfway clear out yesterday and still held a few back. Now I have the space I can pull it all out and prop it against the wall for a final lookover.
Just a little sketch for my small painting today, in my larger works I want to do 'less' leave things more vague not build things up so much...it has happened to a certain extent over the past few months but I want to take it further. My brain is mulling over so many new ideas and possibilities..I think that has added to the day's frustrations!

A friend and collector of my work has been following this blog and gave me some great feedback last week. I had an inkling this was happening but he confirmed to me that my smaller paintings are getting nearer the free 'feel' of my larger pieces. I am feeling much less hesitant, less inclination to fiddle about with detail and I am sure my lines and brush strokes are bolder and more 'sure'. Part of the challenge to do the 100 Paintings was to force myself to work small, given free rein I was staying with larger works. It is feeling more natural now to compose smaller pieces and I am surprising myself with what I can come up with on a daily basis...even when I am not feeling very inclined to the easel!

I decided to do a head study of the cob from day 76 as he was so appealing to me.
Today was a day of mixed goings on at the studio, two large paintings finished, smaller paintings varnished, some 'no go' canvases destroyed, some others hanging on for a rework or paintover and a bit of reading to hopefully improve my mind!

I have painted this horse a number of times now on canvases ranging 40X40inch to this 6x6inch, he has alot of impact whatever size he is portrayed! In this composition I wanted to paint about the lovely stretch of his shoulder and the way the light just catches the tassels on his headpiece...I have yet to learn the correct names for the Spanish tack and riders apparel.

This young cob stallion really caught my eye, such beautiful conformation and his coat was burnished with slight dappling. He was really on his toes and quite vocal!!
When I was doing my British Horse Society instructor exams (way back when!!) we had to learn a certain amount of anatomy. Studying the basics of the skeletal and muscular structure has been so useful in my portrayals of the equine form. Along with the years of grooming, riding and caring for horses it gives me a good memory sense when I am painting, the softness of the muzzle, the sheet muscles over the shoulder, the long bones and taut tendons of a leg. I am not saying that this knowledge is a must but it certainly adds to my work. In this painting it was the curve of the underside of the stallions neck that I loved.....it is the sternocephalicus muscle if I remember correctly! and actually not a muscle you want developed in most cases as it is evident when the neck is raised and the head held high...but this guy was just puffing himself up with excitement.

Back to my current grey muse!!
This was a slight variation from my usual oil technique as I put a light greenish tone on the board before starting, in this case where there are strong highlights it lets the lightest lights stand out even more. Today was a 'flowing' day, everything went well, instincts were 'right' and chances taken made good results...it is not always so!!!.... so I enjoyed it to the full. I also left the studio having made some good 'starts' as I call them on other works, but on the way out a few pieces in progress hanging on the wall reminded me that there are some finishes to do!

I have worked from the same reference as in this piece for a watercolour, a watercolour/charcoal mixed media and now this acrylic. This is down to the bare bones, pared down to the essence of what attracts me to using this particular photographic reference. It is the angle of the shoulder and how that joins to the leading leg, it is the precise stage in the movement, the total 'attitude' of this phase in motion....slightly before or after might not have connected with me. I work from photographs and perhaps 5 in every hundred images will impact on me as reference that I might want to work with as the basis for a painting, I just know it when I see it.
This reminds me of the value of timed drawing exercises, where one might have 5 or 10 seconds to express a life model's stance...you have to go for the 'whole feel' not the detail... where one single line has the possibility to express everything!

I have depicted this young stallion in a couple of earlier daily paintings and on wondering what attracts me about him I have decided, apart from his obvious beauty, it was the memory of his wonderful willingness to try hard for his rider. I look forward to following his progress and hope to see him in action again. I think this little painting has a gentleness and quietness about it that I find very appealing.

In this piece I am experimenting with layers of different media using the same reference as day 68. I started with an underpainting of acrylic used very dilute like a watercolour . Then after drying further layers of compressed charcoal are used to create the modelling of the horses neck and shoulder and grey and white chalks are used to add details of bridlework and rider. I am not completely happy with the horses foreleg so am holding off putting this as for sale until I have made a few adjustments.

My goodness, day 70!! I have been busy, not only painting in the studio but painting the dining room at home.

Seemingly simple paintings can be quite the trickiest to do. This example was painted in a matter of seconds and was the fourth try. The brush strokes have to be sure and precise, the adding of colour has to be in the right amount at the right time as well as in the right place. When you find yourself thinking "this is going well I hope I don't mess it up".......well it's usually on it's way to being messed up whilst you've been thinking about it!!! The act of disengaging with being 'in the flow ' interrupts the flow!
I am happy with this little painting, it encompasses everything I have been trying to learn in watercolour this week, loose, flowing and free!

Hmmm, debating whether to admit to a completely bad temper and mood today!! Not quite sure why but it often happens after what I would consider to be a 'good spell, probably a kind of check and balance to stop me getting complacent. I wanted to just get the hell out of the studio but made myself sit tight and keep working, I chucked a load of 'no hopers' into the log burner which needed rekindling( I had lit the days fire using some old canvases what werent making the grade either!!) Finally this oil sketch rewarded me for staying on the premises, I had had a few goes and not got the tonal values right. It is all about the neck rather than the horses face, which is lost in shadow, I wanted to show the lovely shadow down the shoulder blade and the pattern of shadow and reins on the sunlit neck and where it shadows the throat latch on the cheek.
I sincerely hope normal mood is resumed tomorrow!
