Daily equestrian drawings & paintings
by Sally Martin on 1/27/2011 1:28:39 PM
SALLY MARTIN'S AFFORDABLE ART AFFAIR Day 57 As a challenge to paint more successfully on a smaller scale, last year I undertook a project to create 100 paintings in 100 days. The process was a revelation and I realized I miss the daily deadline, it seems to really intensify and focus my creative drive! Another benefit is that is allows me to experiment with new media, dip in to other subject matter and create small artworks that I can offer at very affordable prices. So, here I go again ....almost daily...in to this New Year!!! Day 58
9X14 inch watercolour on 300lb paper £65
After yesterdays imageless blog I have continued to experiment with colour, I learnt alot and had to not attach to get something to 'keep' . Towards the end of my studio day I allowed myself the slight let up of going back to the monochrome and I am actually really pleased with this little piece. I want to develop this composition more, bigger, maybe really big, maybe colour!! This painting has got me excited about getting to the studio tomorrow!!!!
About my Affordable Art Artworks
My subject matter will be mainly equestrian, with some figurative, still life and landscape included.
Sizes will vary, I will post full details with each image.

Conditions of purchase from The Affordable Art Gallery
Please understand colours may vary slightly between the actual painting and the image on your screen due to my digital camera's results and your monitor.
Box canvases can be displayed framed or unframed. Canvas panels will need framing , in paintings where I have worked right up to the edge of the canvas I recommend 'float' framing so the edges remain uncovered by the frame. Works on paper will require mounting, glazing and framing, the image size is the mount board aperture size I suggest for the image.
Works are sold on a first come first served basis, as I am not always able to immediately update the sales status occasionally paintings become twice sold, in which case I will immediately refund the payment. I make every effort to avoid such occasions.
Money Back
If the painting is returned within 30 days of the buyer receiving it, Sally Martin will return money paid minus fees (PayPal /Credit card) and shipping.
The buyer is responsible for return shipping costs

...........because I have been dabblingin a media that has flummoxed me for years!! I decided to not attach to having a pice of art to blog about today, experimentation with no attachment to outcome was neccessary.
This Blog was in my inbox and pretty much says it all, it is relevant to every area of creativity!!

The Value of Taking Risks
by Lori Woodward
Today's Post is by Lori Woodward, Regular contributing writer for FineArtViews. She also writes "The Artist's Life" blog on American Artists' Forum. Lori is a member of The Putney Painters, an invitational group that paints under the direction of Richard Schmid and Nancy Guzik. Find out how you can be a guest author.
Have you ever considered what your art might look like in a year from now if you admitted that it has flaws and could use a little improvement? I've often heard that when artists think they've arrived, that they're "dead in the water". It's a sad existence when an artist produces the same kinds of images year after year - without any progress of risk involved.
No matter where you are in your art ability, it's a fact that you can get to the next level. I've heard even the most admired living artists say they are still learning and improving. That's one of the great things about being an artist, the learning never ends. It's up to us to keep our work fresh and exciting, not only for our collectors' sake but for our own psychological well being.
In my opinion, it's wrong for gallerists to control what an artist paints. Many times, artists are asked to paint the same subject, over and over, just to appease the gallery's clients. Although this might make some quick money in the short term, it often has the effect of boring the artist and making him or her feel like it's all just for the money -- and for the gallery, it IS about the money.
Back to my previous thoughts: taking risks, improving, and never giving in to mediocrity. No matter how good you are at what you do, you can always get better. But how? What I and many of my colleagues do is study artworks of the past and the present in order to fill my mind with images of great artwork. I hang out with a pretty well known group of artists: Richard Schmid, Nancy Guzik, and on occasion - Daniel Keys, Jeremy Lipking and Tony Pro. I get plenty of access to paintings that make mine look... well.. amateur.
In reality, my paintings are not amateur and I thought they were pretty darned good before I started painting with these masters. How good my painting is - depends on what painting it's next to. Sometimes it's downright depressing to look at my work after spending a few days with these artists, but in the long run - hanging out with them makes me strive for higher quality in my work. I gain much from watching them paint and listening to what they say.
OK, so you may not be able to hang out with these artists, but you can still look at their paintings online and in books. My greatest teachers are artists who've been long dead... William Trost Richards, Albert Thompson Bricher, and others. Not only do I study their paintings from photos and books, I often copy them. In fact, copying has been the best way for me to improve in a short period of time.
Yes, I also sometimes copy the works of living artists whom I admire, but I don't show those paintings outside of my studio and NEVER put them out there for sale.
I was talking to a collector last month who said that when he goes to a show where the artist has 100 similar paintings, it turns him off. This collector wants to buy something with lasting value... yes, in the style of the artist, but definitely a one-of-a-kind, original. I bring this up because artists who paint hundreds of similar scenes - so similar that it's hard to remember one painting from another - are really hurting their market in the long run. OK, so I've wandered off topic... or so it seems I have. An artist who is afraid to move on, take risks and get out of his or her own box is probably going to saturate his market at some point.
I take my study and artistic growth seriously. I think we all should. Personally, I don't let anyone bully me into staying with the same subject matter - repeating myself endlessly just for another sale. I'M THE ARTIST and I get to decide what to paint... what stirs my soul. Style will come naturally - getting to the master level comes only with focused, long term effort.
One last word about taking risks and growth. Seeking improvement often means temporary failure. The people in this world who are famous for their accomplishments have had many failures, but we often don't know about those failures. They just never gave up pursuing excellence. So, don't get discouraged when you try a new technique or subject matter and you fall flat on your face. That's no excuse to return to repeating what you already can do - forever and ever.
So, let's encourage one another to think about how we can each improve and then give support when the going gets tough. AND remember to offer congratulations when the next level is achieved.

For some reason the lower right hand side shows a really dark area which is not so in the original so I will resolve that in another attempt at photographing this little painting. This lot were coming up the hill halfway through their race over the sticks and were having to really slog on!! This watercolour was created using a reference photo by my partner Chris who took much better photos than me on the day but is kind enough to share :-) !!

These two were really stepping out back to the stables after the race, I loved the effect the steam had on the coat colours and background.

Everyone loves a grey! This one was showing good jumping form over this fence and I couldn't resist doing this little impression.
In fact this painting was completed yesterday and at 11pm as I was dozing off to sleep I remembered I had completely forgotten about blogging it!!

I wanted this painting to express the movement in a thoroughbred race. As the contenders gallop by you don't see the detail in everything, you may focus on one or two horses and pan across as they go past but those legs are moving so fast, the shape of the horses bodies moves and changes so quickly you just get a brief impression of the whole mass.
So this piece is about the horses thundering by, the legs a blur, heads and necks undulating with the gallop stride, jockeys poised and focused.

Staying on the National Hunt theme this horse was eager to be off. I like watching the horses being led out to the track, some are hesitant, some are jigging on the spot and some are pulling their lads or lasses arms out!! This horse nearly took his lass with him!!

Last week I got to my first National Hunt race meeting in years, Lingfield Racecourse is just a 20 minute drive from my hometown. It was a pretty grey and dull day but it was good to be out with my camera, I love watching the saddling enclosure and the parade ring and jockeys being legged up, plus of course the race itself!
I did work on a race yard way back in my early twenties for trainer Jack O'Donaghue who trained a Grand National winner back in the 50's (Nickel Coin) and trained for the Queen Mother. I liked the regimen at a race yard, the morning stables, the afternoon break before evening stables...it was just a pity I could not gallop a horse.....well gallop under control to be more precise!!! I provided endless entertainment for the lads and jockeys as I would unintentionally whistle by full pelt...there were a few remarks and it was decided I had an electric bum and 'no hands'.!!......I was designated to the round pen and being lunged over jumps. After a few months I decided that the gallops were not for me.......apart from on horses trained to have power steering and brakes.
I liked this scene of the washed down horses returning to the stables wet and steaming.
