SALLY MARTIN'S DRAWN TO DRESSAGE BLOG It is time for my new challenge 'Drawn to Dressage' to launch, I have been thinking about it rather than doing it for way too long! I have to admit to some of the reasons for doing this project being selfish, basically (from knowing the results of past blog projects) it helps me raise my game, makes me experiment more and question why I do what I do seeing as I try to explain and share the experience with you. For those who follow along I hope there will be something to gain from the project also, I know from speaking to art appreciators at exhibitions and events that an insight in to one's processes and methods can be interesting, hopefully the added bonus will be original art at special blog project prices.
'Drawn' - Sketch 9
Mixed Media on deckle edged 300lb watercolour paper - image size approx 30x22inch inches £195
This is quite a large sketch and I do find facing a large piece of heavyweight quality paper somewhat daunting at times as you can't just wipe it off if it goes wrong......you get one shot and have to go with the flow...and see what you get!!

'Drawn' - Sketch 8
Mixed Media on deckle edged handmade paper - image size approx 10.5X8 inches £50
I have photographed this piece sitting on grey board so you can see the deckled edge to the paper, these pieces can look fabulous 'float' framed under glass so you keep the edges on display.

'Drawn' - Sketch 7
Mixed Media on 90lb watercolour paper - image size approx 10.5X8 inches £60
Note to self ...FIGURE OUT THE WHITE BALANCE ON THE CAMERA!!!! The paper is a soft white but has photographed quite grey due to my lack of white balance knowledge setting my camera up.
Again this is mixed media, crayon and wash, left to dry them charcoal worked over, then certain details 'lifted' out with a putty eraser. It has reminded me how much I like the effect of the lift out technique where you start by covering the whole piece with a tone in pencil, charcoal etc then lift the media off in stages from mid tones to the lightest at the very end.

'Drawn' - Sketch 6
Water soluble crayon and wash on 300lb watercolour paper image size approx 11X11 inches £75
Experimenting a bit with hard and soft edges, I am amazed by how many differnt effects you can get from one water soluble crayon, a brush and some water. The quality of paper is crucial, I am using 300lb watercolour paper, it is very thick and can handle lots of water being applied without buckling as would a more lighweight paper.

'Drawn' - Sketch 5
Water soluble crayon and wash on 300lb watercolour paper image size approx 11X11 inches £75
Again linking two horse and rider combos together. Drawn with water soluble crayon, worked over with a wash, then after dry worked over again with graphite stick which I was pleased with becuase the depth and tone of the graphite complemented the tone of the wash and did not overpower it.

'Drawn' - Sketch 4
Water soluble crayon and wash on 300lb watercolour paper image size approx 11X11 inches £55
This continues the process of distilling down to the basics, placement of the shapes and the angle and attitude of the riders body give the feel to the piece. I am getting more interested in depicting pairs or groups of riders. I think the energy of a busy working in arena is amazing and am working on some larger pieces on this theme.

'Drawn' - Sketch 3
Water soluble crayon and wash on 300lb watercolour paper image size approx 15X11 inches £75
I am still getting to grips with this medium, it is a wax type crayon that is water soluble, there are so many variations of effect depending on how light the sketched line is, how much water you use etc but I really like the free flowing feeling that can be achieved. This is not something that is about detail, there is just enough information and your mind interprets the rest!

'Drawn' - Sketch 2
Water soluble crayon and wash on 300lb watercolour paper image size approx 15X11 inches £75
I find the half pass such a beautiful movement to watch, it is so expressive when performed well. This sketch is done as a drawing with a water soluble crayon which is them worked with a brush loaded with water I am finding it exciting to work with, you have to be bold, plan a bit and the rest is left to chance! 'Drawn' Sketch 2 15X11 inch Special price £75
